This morning I was listening to music and I realized I was getting tired of listening to the same music over and over again. Then my mind started to ramble and I questioned myself, why is it that some playlists get boring faster? My guess is that there are a lot of factors from BPM to Artist Veneration but the one factor I thought of first was length. After all if the playlist is long enough you’ll never get tired since you would have only listen to the playlist once in your entire life. I bet there is enough music in the world to last more than a lifespan. As my mind kept rambling the connection to one of my favorite books popped to mind. The Theory of Fun an illustrated, fifty page book by Raph Koster in which he states that games get boring once we find the pattern in them.
It’s true that people tend to find patterns in everything, we cant help it that’s how we (humans) are wired. Going back to the music, I guess repetitiveness makes us find patterns in the music and after that it’s no fun anymore. In a playlist even if it’s set to random with enough times you can determine the next song just by the amount of time the first sound takes to play. So yes, I agree patterns make life boring. After all this train of thought my only logical conclusion was if you want to make a game full of endless mode don’t ever repeat the song just keep playing different ones.
